JOJO ABOT

The world isn’t big enough for JOJO ABOT. As a director, rapper, model, singer, visual artist, actor, producer and multimedia performer, she not only blows up all kinds of creative boundaries – she always does it from a perspective that’s both culturally specific and international. On her four-song 2016 debut »FYFA WOFO,« the artist – who lives in New York, Copenhagen and Accra – told a narrative in Ewe and English dealing with issues of gender, race, tradition, family structures and love, while the music created a unique sound building on current strains of Afrobeat, soul and hip-hop. Recorded in South Africa, its successor »NGIWUNKULUNKULU« brought the Ghanian artist to new musical realms, just as in her interdisciplinary work »Power to the God Within,« which gave Abot’s impressive oeuvre an even sharper aesthetic and political dimension.
