Museum of Masculinities

The Museum of Masculinities is an Instagram exhibition displaying digital readymades of male self-presentation on dating apps. The term »readymade« is a term that traces back mainly to the work of Marcel Duchamp, who shocked the art world in 1917 by simply turning a urinal on its side and titling it »The Fountain.« Profiles on dating apps are like digital storefronts in gendered capitalism, designed to facilitate romantic and/or sexual contact. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more people are using these apps and thus revealing information on the construction of self-images and masculinities. The Museum of Masculinities analyses them using the readymade method with analytical image descriptions, ranging from short to long, serious to humorous. They will appear on the Instagram of Feminist Meme School, a project launched by Caren Miesenberger in 2018 as part of the Pop-Kultur Nachwuchs programme at the invitation of Yeşim Duman, continuing a barrage of memes that target outdated macho structures.
